Carer's Allowance Ireland: Eligibility, Rates, and How to Apply

Your parent has dementia, you've cut your hours at work to look after them, and now you're wondering whether the state will actually help. The short answer: yes, but the application process is more involved than most families expect.

Ireland's Department of Social Protection (DSP) runs three separate carer payments — Carer's Allowance, Carer's Benefit, and the annual Carer Support Grant. Each has different eligibility rules, and getting the right one (or combination) can mean the difference between hundreds of euro per week and nothing.

Carer's Allowance: The Weekly Means-Tested Payment

Carer's Allowance is a weekly payment for anyone providing full-time care (at least 35 hours per week) to an incapacitated person. As of July 2026, the weekly rates are:

• Under 66: €270 per week
• Aged 66+: €308 per week

The payment is means-tested, but the disregards are generous. Single carers can earn up to €1,000 per week before it affects the payment. Couples get a €2,000 weekly disregard.

How the Means Test Works

The DSP calculates your assessable income after deducting PRSI, pension contributions, union dues, and travel expenses. Capital (savings, investments, shares — but not your home) gets a €50,000 disregard. For couples, combined capital is halved before applying the disregard.

Weekly means from capital above the disregard are calculated on a sliding scale: €1 per €1,000 for the first €10,000 over, €2 per €1,000 for the next €10,000, and €4 per €1,000 after that.

If you already receive another social welfare payment, you may qualify for the half-rate Carer's Allowance on top of your existing payment.

Carer's Benefit: For Employees Leaving Work

Carer's Benefit is a non-means-tested weekly payment of €271 for employees who leave work or reduce hours to care full-time. You can receive it for up to 104 weeks per care recipient.

To qualify, you need 156 lifetime PRSI contributions and 39 weeks paid in the relevant tax year (2024 for 2026 claims). Class S (self-employed) contributions count. Under the July 2026 rules, you can work or study up to 18.5 hours per week, provided net weekly earnings don't exceed €1,000.

The Carer Support Grant

Every full-time carer receives a €2,000 tax-free grant annually, paid automatically on the first Thursday of June. If you're already on Carer's Allowance, Carer's Benefit, or Domiciliary Care Allowance, it arrives without an application. Otherwise, apply independently using Form CSG1.

If you care for two people, you receive a grant for each.

How to Apply for Carer's Allowance

1. Get form CR1 from your local Intreo Centre or download it from welfare.ie
2. Have your parent's GP complete the CARMed1 medical form confirming the care need
3. Gather proof of income (payslips, pension statements, bank statements covering 3 months)
4. Submit the completed application to the Carer's Allowance Section, DSP, Government Buildings, Ballinalee Road, Longford

Processing typically takes 10-12 weeks. If approved, payment is backdated to your application date.
