Respite Care Ireland: Options for Family Carers Who Need a Break
What Respite Care Means in Ireland
Respite care is temporary relief for the person providing day-to-day care. Your parent receives supervised care — either in a residential setting or through enhanced home visits — while you take a break.
The break might be a weekend, a week, or a regular scheduled arrangement (one weekend a month, for example). The purpose is straightforward: preventing carer burnout that leads to the entire care arrangement collapsing.
The Options Available
Residential respite: Your parent stays temporarily in a nursing home, community hospital, or dedicated respite unit. Availability, duration, and any contribution vary by local service and bed availability.
In-home respite: A carer comes to your parent's home to provide extended cover while you step away. This can be arranged through the HSE home support system or through a private agency. In-home respite is less disruptive for your parent — they stay in familiar surroundings — but availability depends on workforce capacity.
Day centre attendance: Your parent spends daytime hours at a community day care centre, returning home in the evening. Day centres provide social activities, meals, and supervised care. This gives you several hours of reliable, regular relief during the week.
Emergency respite: If you're hospitalised, injured, or facing a crisis that makes caregiving impossible, ask the public health nurse or local Home Support Office whether an emergency respite option is available.
How to Arrange HSE-Funded Respite
Residential respite through the HSE is coordinated by the local Home Support Office or the public health nurse. The process:
- Your PHN or GP submits a referral identifying the carer's need for a break and the care recipient's clinical profile
- The HSE assesses available beds in the local area
- A placement is offered based on clinical priority and bed availability
Ask the local Home Support Office or PHN what referral or paperwork is required for the available respite option. If your parent is already receiving HSE home support, the PHN managing their care plan is the starting point.
Availability and waiting times for planned residential respite vary by region, so ask early about local options.

Costs
Charges vary by service and provider. Confirm any contribution for HSE or public residential respite, and get a written quote for private residential, in-home, or day-centre care. The researched standard private daytime home-care rate is €30–€35 per hour; overnight and other arrangements vary.
The Carer's Support Grant Connection
If you're receiving Carer's Allowance, Carer's Benefit, or Domiciliary Care Allowance, the annual €2,000 Carer's Support Grant can help fund a break. The grant is paid on the first Thursday of June and is exempt from income tax.
Many carers put the grant toward a week of residential respite or a block of private in-home respite hours that gives them enough consecutive days to genuinely recover.
Planning Respite Before You Need It
The worst time to arrange respite is when you're already burned out. By then, you're too exhausted to navigate the system, and waiting lists mean help doesn't arrive when the crisis hits.
Build respite into your care plan from the start. When the PHN conducts the initial care needs assessment, raise respite as part of the conversation — both regular planned breaks and an emergency respite protocol.
