How to Apply for Medicare Savings Programs in Rural Nevada by Fax or Mail
Physical Distance Should Not Stop an MSP Application
If your parent lives in Elko, Nye, Humboldt, White Pine, Pershing, Lincoln, or any of Nevada's rural counties, the nearest DWSS district office might be a two-hour drive each way. Broadband internet can be unreliable, making the Access Nevada online portal impractical. And DWSS phone lines — toll-free at 877-543-7669 — often mean 30 minutes to an hour on hold.
The good news: Nevada accepts MSP applications by fax and by U.S. mail. Neither requires an internet connection, a district office visit, or a phone interview to submit.
Applying by Fax
Download and complete the paper application (Form 2919-EG, available from DWSS forms pages or through any district office). Attach all verification documents — Medicare card copy, income statements, bank statements, ID, and citizenship proof. Fax the entire packet to:
- Northern Nevada fax: 775-448-5094
- Southern Nevada fax: 702-486-1634
Keep the fax confirmation page. It is your proof of the submission date and protects you if DWSS later claims the application was never received. The filing date locks in potential retroactive benefits for SLMB and QI (up to three months before application).
Applying by Mail
Mail the completed application and verification documents to:
DWSS Processing Center P.O. Box 15400 Las Vegas, NV 89114-5400
Use certified mail with return receipt requested. Standard mail works, but you lose proof of delivery — and in a dispute over whether DWSS received your application, that receipt matters.

Rural District Offices
While fax and mail avoid the drive, some families prefer an in-person visit. Nevada has DWSS offices in rural areas, but staffing and hours vary:
- Elko DWSS office: Call to confirm it accepts drop-offs for your case and check current hours.
- Carson City DWSS office: Call to confirm it accepts drop-offs for your case and check current hours.
Call before driving — rural offices sometimes operate on limited hours or require appointments. The statewide toll-free line (877-543-7669) can confirm which office serves your county and its current hours.
Document Tracking Is Critical in Rural Applications
The biggest risk with fax and mail applications: documents getting lost in DWSS processing. Rural applicants do not have the option to walk into an office and ask about their case the next day. Build a paper trail:
- Fax every page of the application and every verification document in a single session. Write the applicant's name and last four digits of their Social Security number on every page.
- If mailing, photocopy everything before sending. If DWSS claims a document was missing, you can fax the copy immediately rather than starting from scratch.
- After 15 business days, call DWSS at 877-543-7669 to confirm the application was received and ask whether any additional documents are needed. Note the representative's name and the date.
The Nevada Medicare Savings Programs & Extra Help Guide includes the full document preparation checklist, all fax numbers and mailing addresses, and a tracking timeline for rural applicants managing the process entirely by mail.
