Meals on Wheels Ireland: How to Arrange It and What It Costs

What Meals on Wheels Provides

Meals on Wheels is a community-based service that delivers hot, nutritious meals to older people living at home in Ireland. Most providers deliver a main meal daily, Monday to Friday, with some areas offering weekend and evening meal options.

The service is run by a network of local voluntary organisations, community groups, and some HSE-supported providers. There is no single national provider — coverage depends on what's available in your parent's area.

Beyond the meal itself, the daily delivery acts as a welfare check. A volunteer or staff member sees your parent, confirms they're responsive and mobile, and can flag concerns to the family or the public health nurse if something seems wrong.

How Much It Costs

Meals on Wheels is heavily subsidised. Most providers charge between €4 and €7 per meal, depending on the local organisation and the meal type. Some areas offer additional services like frozen meals for weekends at a similar price point.

There is no national means test — pricing varies by provider. Ask the local provider about any hardship arrangement before relying on free delivery.

How to Arrange It

There's no central application form. The process depends on your parent's area:

Through the public health nurse (PHN): the PHN can refer your parent directly to the local Meals on Wheels provider as part of a community care plan. This is the most common route for older people already receiving HSE home support.

Direct contact: find the local provider through the HSE community services directory, Citizens Information, or local community centre notice boards. Call them directly to arrange delivery.

Through the GP: your parent's GP can suggest a referral to the PHN, who then coordinates the meals service alongside other supports.

Delivery timing depends on the local provider and availability; some areas have waiting lists.

When Meals on Wheels Fits

The service works well for parents who can still manage most daily activities but struggle with meal preparation — especially if they live alone and skip meals or rely on tea and toast.

Nutritional decline can be a sign that broader support is needed. A hot daily meal won't solve everything, but it addresses one of the most practical gaps in solo living.

Meals on Wheels also complements HSE home support hours. If your parent's allocated home help visits focus on personal care (showering, dressing, mobility), the meals service covers the nutrition gap without needing additional care hours.

Limitations

The service has practical constraints:

  • Geographic coverage is uneven. Urban areas generally have reliable daily delivery; rural areas may have limited frequency or no service at all.
  • Dietary customisation varies. Ask whether the local provider can meet diabetic, pureed, low-salt, or other dietary needs. Highly specialised diets may not be available.
  • It's one meal a day. Meals on Wheels doesn't cover breakfast or evening meals. If your parent needs help with all meals, home support hours or private care is the route.
  • No clinical nutrition management. If your parent has dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) or requires PEG feeding, Meals on Wheels isn't appropriate — that needs clinical nursing involvement.
