Georgia DFCS County Offices and Customer Contact for Medicare Savings Programs

Finding the Right DFCS Office

Georgia runs its Medicare Savings Programs through 159 county DFCS offices — one for every county in the state. Your parent's application, renewal, and any processing issues are handled exclusively by the office in the county where they live. It doesn't matter where you live or which office is closest to you. A parent in Bibb County means Bibb County DFCS handles the case, full stop.

To find the correct county office, go to the Georgia DHS website and use the office locator, or search "DFCS office [county name] Georgia." Each listing shows the physical address, phone number, and fax number. In metro Atlanta, counties like Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, and Cobb each have their own office — don't assume they share intake.

The Customer Contact Number

The statewide DFCS customer contact center is 1-877-423-4746. This is the central number for all DFCS programs, including Medicare Savings Programs. The automated system asks you to select a program category — choose the Medicaid or medical assistance option.

Practical reality: the phone system is difficult. Families report being disconnected when requesting a live representative, automated loops that circle back to the main menu, and hold times that stretch past an hour. A few timing strategies that help:

  • Call mid-morning on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday — Monday mornings and Friday afternoons are peak
  • If the automated system doesn't recognize the client ID, try entering it without leading zeros
  • If you get disconnected twice, go to the county office in person if possible — showing up when doors open is often faster than spending a morning on hold

Metro vs. Rural: Different Challenges

Metro Atlanta offices (Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cobb, Clayton) serve large populations and run heavy caseloads. Processing times trend longer, and the waiting room at walk-in hours can fill quickly. Arriving when the office opens is the standard advice from people who've been through it.

Rural county offices cover broader territories with fewer staff. The office might only handle walk-ins certain days of the week. Phone access can actually be better at smaller offices — you're more likely to reach the caseworker directly. But if your parent lives in a rural county with limited transportation, the remote filing options matter more: mail or fax Form 700 to the county office, or file online through Georgia Gateway.

When DFCS Doesn't Respond

If you've filed an application and can't get a status update through the phone or portal:

  1. GeorgiaCares SHIP counselors (1-866-552-4464, Option 4) provide unbiased Medicare, MSP, and Extra Help counseling and can assist with Form 700 applications; they cannot manage DFCS cases
  2. Visit the office with the application receipt — if you mailed Form 700, bring a copy and the proof of mailing. Ask the front desk to confirm receipt and provide a case number
  3. Check processing standards — DFCS has 10 working days for SLMB and QI applications, and up to 45 calendar days for QMB under standard processing rules. If those deadlines have passed without a decision, document the timeline — processing delays can affect coverage start dates

The Georgia Medicare Savings Programs & Extra Help Guide maps out every contact route for DFCS, GeorgiaCares, and the escalation path when standard channels don't work — including how to trigger a supervisory review when processing exceeds the standard timeline.
