Wyoming Medicare Savings Program Renewal
How Renewal Works
Wyoming Medicare Savings Program coverage is not permanent — it requires review every 12 months. The state first attempts to verify eligibility electronically. If eligibility cannot be confirmed this way, WES generates a prepopulated renewal form and mails it to the beneficiary. The enrollee (or their authorized representative) must complete and return the form with updated income and asset documentation.
If the renewal is not returned, WDH may close coverage after providing 15 days' advance notice. This is the single most common reason families lose MSP benefits they are still eligible for.
The Renewal Timeline
The state reviews eligibility every 12 months. Watch for WDH correspondence and make sure the address on file is current.
The renewal form asks for current monthly income (Social Security, pensions, any earnings), bank account balances, and any changes to household composition, Medicare status, or address. The same disregard rules apply at renewal — Wyoming evaluates countable income after the $20 general disregard, not gross income.
What Can Go Wrong
Lost mail. Renewal packets sent to outdated addresses never reach the enrollee. If your parent has moved, update their address in the WES portal at wesystem.wyo.gov or call the Customer Service Center at 1-855-294-2127 immediately. Set up an authorized representative so copies go to a second address.
Missed deadlines. Wyoming gives 30 days to complete, sign, and return a mailed renewal form. If WDH closes coverage because the form was not returned, it provides 15 days' advance notice. In frontier counties where mail delivery is slower and winter weather can delay postal service, do not wait until the deadline to respond. Faxing or emailing the response to [email protected] is faster than mailing.
Income changes. A Social Security cost-of-living adjustment that pushes gross income above a threshold looks disqualifying, but may not be once the $20 disregard is applied. Always run the countable-income math before assuming your parent no longer qualifies.
Asset changes. Inheriting money, receiving a life insurance payout, or accumulating savings above $9,950 (individual) can trigger a denial at renewal even if income still qualifies.

If Renewal Is Denied
A denial at renewal is not final. Wyoming Medicaid must provide a written notice explaining the reason for the denial and informing the enrollee of their right to request a fair hearing. Submit the written fair hearing request within 30 calendar days of the date on the notice. To preserve existing benefits while the appeal is pending, submit the request within 15 calendar days of the notice date.
During the hearing process, benefits can continue while the appeal is pending if the request is submitted within the 15-day continuation window.
Common denial reasons that are worth appealing: the state miscounted income (forgot the $20 disregard or did not apply earned income deductions), used outdated bank balance information, or terminated coverage because renewal mail was returned as undeliverable when the enrollee was actually at the same address.
Keeping Coverage Year After Year
The best defense against renewal lapses is preparation. Set a calendar reminder two months before the expected renewal date. Keep copies of all documents submitted. If your parent has an authorized representative registered in WES, make sure that person also watches for mail from the Customer Service Center.
