Wyoming Extra Help Medicare Prescriptions
What Extra Help Does
Extra Help — officially called the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) — reduces or eliminates the costs of Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage. With full Extra Help, a beneficiary pays roughly $5 for generic drugs and $13 for brand-name drugs at the pharmacy. The Part D monthly premium, annual deductible, and coverage gap costs are eliminated or sharply reduced.
Under the Inflation Reduction Act, Part D out-of-pocket prescription costs are capped at $2,100 per year for all Medicare beneficiaries. Extra Help drops that cost far lower — effectively to the copay amounts alone.
Two Paths to Extra Help in Wyoming
Path 1: Automatic qualification through a Medicare Savings Program. If your parent is approved for QMB, SLMB, or QI through the Wyoming Department of Health, they are automatically deemed eligible for full Extra Help. No separate application to SSA is needed. CMS transmits their status to pharmacy benefit managers, and the reduced copays appear the next time they fill a prescription.
This is the path most Wyoming families should know about. Many people apply for Extra Help directly through SSA without realizing that a Medicare Savings Program application would also cover their Part B premium — a much larger monthly cost than prescription copays.
Path 2: Direct application through SSA. Individuals who do not qualify for MSP (income too high) can apply for Extra Help on its own through the Social Security Administration. The 2026 income limit for standalone Extra Help is approximately $23,940 per year for an individual. The asset limit is higher than MSP limits. Apply online at ssa.gov, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213, or visit a local SSA office.
The MIPPA Connection
Here is something most families do not know: when someone applies for Extra Help through SSA, the Social Security Administration automatically sends their information to the Wyoming Department of Health. Under MIPPA (Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act), Wyoming treats that data file as an MSP application. The state runs a check against MSP eligibility criteria and contacts the applicant for any missing verification.
This means applying for Extra Help at SSA can trigger an MSP evaluation you did not even know to ask for. If the income and assets qualify, the applicant could end up with both Extra Help and Part B premium coverage from the state.
The filing date of the original SSA Extra Help application becomes the protected filing date for MSP eligibility, which matters for retroactive coverage.

What Extra Help Actually Covers
Full Extra Help (the kind MSP enrollees receive automatically) covers the Part D plan premium up to a benchmark amount, eliminates the Part D annual deductible, and caps copays at the statutory benchmark rates. If the enrollee's Part D plan premium exceeds the benchmark, they pay only the difference.
Generic and brand-name copay amounts are set by CMS annually. For 2026, full Extra Help copays are approximately $5.10 for generics and $12.65 for preferred brand-name drugs.
Extra Help and Wyoming's Prescription Assistance Landscape
Historical Medicare and CMS directories have listed a Wyoming Prescription Drug Assistance Program (PDAP) or PharmAssist, but Wyoming has no active standalone State Pharmaceutical Assistance Program (SPAP) that acts as a secondary payer to Medicare Part D.
Beneficiaries seeking prescription cost relief rely primarily on federal Extra Help (LIS), through MSP deeming or a direct application to SSA.
