NJSave Application Status: How to Check and Escalate a Stalled Application
You Filed Through NJSave and Then Heard Nothing
The NJSave portal accepted your parent's application. You uploaded the bank statements, the Social Security award letter, and the Medicare card. The screen said the application was submitted. That was six weeks ago, and the silence since then has been complete — no approval, no denial, no request for missing documents.
This is common, and understanding why requires knowing what happens behind NJSave's submission screen.
Where Your Application Actually Goes
NJSave is an intake portal operated by the Division of Aging Services (DoAS). When your parent applies through NJSave, the system screens them for multiple programs simultaneously — Medicare Savings Programs (QMB, SLMB, QI), Extra Help, PAAD, Senior Gold, Lifeline utility credits, and hearing aid assistance.
But NJSave doesn't make the final determination for all of these. The routing depends on the program:
- PAAD and Senior Gold: DoAS processes these internally. Decisions come directly from the Division of Aging Services.
- QMB, SLMB, QI: NJSave screens and routes the application. Depending on the program and case, DoAS processing units or the county welfare agency determine eligibility under DMAHS oversight.
- Extra Help / LIS: NJSave transmits data to the Social Security Administration, which processes the federal LIS application.
When an application "stalls," the bottleneck may be at the county welfare agency. NJSave may have forwarded the file, but the county could be working through a backlog or have sent a missing-information request to your parent's mailing address that never arrived (or arrived and was overlooked).
How to Check Status
Call the NJSave helpline: 1-800-792-9745 (or 1-866-NJSAVE-5). Ask which programs your parent was screened for and whether any determinations have been made. For PAAD and Senior Gold, DoAS can give you an answer directly.
Contact the processing agency: For QMB, SLMB, and QI, ask DoAS where the application was routed. Depending on the processing path, contact the county Board of Social Services or the DoAS processing unit and ask for the status by your parent's name and case number.
Check for missing-information requests: Counties send document requests by mail. If your parent doesn't check mail carefully, or if you handle paperwork from out of state, these notices can sit in a pile. Ask the county caseworker whether any outstanding document requests are holding up the case.

When the Wait Passes 45 Days
State agencies are subject to a 45-day processing standard for MSP determinations. If your parent's application has been pending longer than that without a decision, contact the agency for a status update and ask whether it needs any additional documents.
At that point, your escalation options are:
- Request a supervisor review at the county welfare agency
- File a written complaint with DMAHS (PO Box 712, Trenton, NJ 08625) citing the 45-day standard and the date of submission
- Contact Legal Services of New Jersey at 1-888-LSNJ-LAW — they can intervene with the county on processing delays for low-income applicants
Every month of delay is another month your parent pays the full $202.90 Part B premium. QMB coverage starts the month after approval — it is not retroactive — so processing delays cost real money.
The New Jersey Medicare Savings Programs Guide maps the full application routing, includes a progress tracker with fields for each agency milestone, and provides an escalation protocol with the specific offices and phone numbers to contact when processing stalls.
