NJSave Application: How to Apply Online and What Documents You Need

One Application, Six Programs

NJSave is New Jersey's combined benefits portal, and it does more than most people realize. A single NJSave application screens your parent for Medicare Savings Programs (QMB, SLMB, QI), Extra Help for Part D drugs, PAAD and Senior Gold prescription assistance, Lifeline utility credits, and hearing aid assistance — all at once.

The Division of Aging Services runs it. You can apply online at the NJSave portal, download and mail the paper form (AP-2) to PO Box 637 in Trenton, or call 1-800-792-9745 to request a mailed packet.

Documents to Gather Before You Start

NJSave asks for financial documentation, and incomplete submissions are the top reason applications stall. Collect these before opening the portal:

  • Medicare card (red, white, and blue card showing Part A and Part B dates)
  • Social Security award letter or SSA-1099 showing gross benefit amount
  • Pension or annuity statements for any retirement income
  • 30 to 60 days of bank statements for every checking, savings, CD, and money market account
  • Cash-value life insurance statements (term policies with no cash value are fine to skip)
  • IRA or 401(k) statements (countable unless in periodic distribution)
  • Proof of NJ residency — utility bill, lease, or property tax notice
  • Photo ID — driver's license or state ID

If an adult child is filing on behalf of a parent, include a signed authorized representative designation (there's a section on the form) or a copy of the power of attorney.

What Happens After You Submit

NJSave routes your application to different agencies depending on which programs fit:

  • PAAD and Senior Gold go straight to the Division of Aging Services for processing
  • MSP applications (QMB, SLMB, QI) are forwarded to the county Board of Social Services or processed centrally by DoAS
  • Extra Help data is transmitted to the Social Security Administration

The state's processing standard is 45 days. In practice, QMB applications routed to county welfare agencies can take longer — some families report three to six months. If your application has been pending more than 45 days with no request for additional documentation, call 1-800-792-9745 and ask for a supervisor or file a complaint referencing the processing standard.

Checking Application Status

NJSave itself doesn't offer a detailed status tracker. To check progress, call the NJSave helpline at 1-800-792-9745 with the applicant's Social Security number and the submission date. Write down the name of anyone you speak with and the date of the call.

For MSP applications forwarded to a county Board of Social Services, you may need to contact the county office directly. Each of New Jersey's 21 counties has its own office.

Common Reasons Applications Stall

Missing bank statements are the most frequent hold-up. The state needs statements for every account where the applicant's SSN appears — including joint accounts with an adult child. If a joint account holds funds that belong to the child, you'll need to submit records showing who deposited the money.

The other common issue: gross versus net income. NJSave counts gross Social Security (before the Part B premium is deducted), not the net deposit. The $20 unearned income disregard is applied during eligibility review, not by the applicant.

Faster Path for Urgent Situations

If your parent needs immediate help — a medical provider is threatening collections, or they can't afford this month's prescriptions — contact NJ SHIP (1-800-792-8820) for free one-on-one Medicare counseling and help understanding next steps.

The New Jersey Medicare Savings Programs, Extra Help & PAAD/Senior Gold Guide includes the full NJSave document checklist, an application progress tracker, and step-by-step instructions for every program the portal covers.
