Home Safety Checklist for Elderly Parents in New Jersey

Bathroom (Highest Risk Area)

• [ ] Grab bars installed at toilet and inside shower/tub (secured into wall studs, not suction-mounted)
• [ ] Non-slip mat or adhesive strips in tub and shower floor
• [ ] Raised toilet seat if your parent has difficulty standing from a low position
• [ ] Shower bench or transfer seat for seated bathing
• [ ] Handheld showerhead to reduce reaching and turning
• [ ] Night light with motion sensor for nighttime trips
• [ ] Medication stored at counter height, not in a high cabinet

Kitchen

• [ ] Frequently used items moved to counter level or lower cabinets — no step stools
• [ ] Auto-shutoff kettle and stove knob covers if your parent forgets burners
• [ ] Non-slip mat in front of the sink
• [ ] Fire extinguisher accessible and not expired
• [ ] Good lighting over work surfaces

Stairways and Hallways

• [ ] Handrails on both sides of all staircases, securely mounted
• [ ] All stairs well-lit with switches at top and bottom
• [ ] No loose rugs or runners on stairs — remove or secure with double-sided tape
• [ ] Clear pathways with no electrical cords crossing walking areas
• [ ] Consider a stairlift if your parent has difficulty with stairs but the bedroom is upstairs

Bedroom

• [ ] No throw rugs — if your parent insists, use non-slip backing

Entryways and Exterior

• [ ] Exterior walkways well-lit and free of ice/leaves (critical during NJ winters)
• [ ] Ramp installed if there are steps your parent struggles with
• [ ] Sturdy handrails at front and back doors
• [ ] Doorbell camera or intercom if your parent has mobility limitations
• [ ] Deadbolt and door hardware operable with limited hand strength

Funding Home Modifications in New Jersey

Home safety modifications aren't just an out-of-pocket expense. Two state programs can cover or subsidize them:

MLTSS (Medicaid). If your parent qualifies for Managed Long Term Services and Supports, environmental accessibility adaptations are a covered benefit. The MCO care manager must authorize modifications as clinically necessary — grab bars, ramps, widened doorways, and stairlifts can all qualify. There's no fixed dollar cap, but the MCO evaluates cost-effectiveness compared to institutional care.

JACC (state-funded). For parents who exceed Medicaid's financial limits, the Jersey Assistance for Community Caregiving program covers home modifications within its $1,090 monthly service cap. The county Area Agency on Aging administers JACC and can assess what modifications are feasible within the budget.

USDA Rural Development. Families in qualifying rural NJ counties may access Section 504 Home Repair grants (up to $10,000 for homeowners 62+) for safety modifications.
