Help Paying Medicare Part B Premium Mississippi
The Part B Premium and What It Takes From Social Security
Every Medicare beneficiary pays the Part B premium — $202.90 per month for the standard premium in 2026. For most seniors, it comes directly out of their Social Security check before they see a dollar. On a $1,300 monthly benefit, that's about 16% gone before rent, food, or prescriptions.
Mississippi's Medicare Savings Programs (QMB, SLMB, and QI) can eliminate that deduction entirely. All three tiers pay the Part B premium. QMB goes further — it also covers Part A premiums, deductibles, and all cost-sharing.
Who Qualifies in Mississippi
Mississippi uses income-only eligibility for its MSPs. There is no asset test — bank accounts, home equity, and vehicles are not counted.
Mississippi DOM's 2026 guide lists these total monthly income limits. Income must be less than the amount shown:
- QMB: $1,380 individual / $1,854 couple
- SLMB: $1,646 individual / $2,214 couple
- QI: $1,846 individual / $2,485 couple
After DOM subtracts the $50 general income exclusion, a senior with $1,320 in gross Social Security has $1,270 countable income — below the 2026 QMB 100% FPL standard of $1,330 for an individual.
How to Apply
Applications go through the Mississippi Division of Medicaid (DOM), not MDHS. File online at access.ms.gov, mail or fax Form DOM-300 to your regional office, or apply in person. Include your Medicare card, Social Security award letter, and proof of Mississippi residency.
DOM's processing time frame is 45 days for most applications, or 90 days when a disability determination is required.

What Happens When You're Approved but Still Paying
This is the question that generates the most frustration. You get the QMB or SLMB approval letter, but the Part B premium keeps coming out of Social Security for weeks or months afterward.
Here's why: after DOM approves you, they send an electronic accretion file to CMS and SSA through the Benefit Exchange Network. SSA then updates the Master Beneficiary Record and stops the premium deduction. DOM advises allowing four to six weeks for the Part B premium to be added back to your Social Security check.
During that lag, premiums continue to be deducted. Once SSA finishes processing the buy-in, they issue a lump-sum refund for all premiums deducted after your coverage start date. The refund comes as a check or direct deposit, separate from your regular Social Security payment.
If 90 days pass without a premium adjustment or refund, contact SSA at 1-800-772-1213 with your DOM approval notice in hand. Ask them to verify the buy-in accretion date and confirm the refund timeline.
Other Options If You Don't Qualify
If your income is above QI limits but you're still struggling with Medicare costs, Mississippi SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) counselors can help you find lower-cost Part D plans and check for other assistance. Contact them through the MAC Center helpline at 1-844-822-4622 — the service is free and independent of insurance brokers.
The Mississippi Medicare Savings Programs & Extra Help Guide includes a premium refund tracker to document every deduction during the waiting period and ensure SSA reimburses every dollar owed.
