Help Paying Medicare Part B Premium Alabama
The 2026 standard Medicare Part B premium is $202.90 per month — $2,434.80 a year deducted directly from a beneficiary's Social Security check. For a senior whose gross Social Security is $1,400, that single deduction consumes more than 14% of their income. Alabama's Medicare Savings Programs are the primary way to eliminate that deduction entirely.
Three Programs, One Goal: Eliminating the Part B Deduction
All three of Alabama's Medicare Savings Programs pay the Part B premium. The difference between them is what else each covers:
QMB (income up to $1,350/month individual, $1,824 couple) pays the Part B premium plus all Medicare deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. It also pays the Part A premium if the beneficiary lacks premium-free Part A.
SLMB (income up to $1,616/month individual, $2,184 couple) pays the Part B premium only.
QI (income up to $1,816/month individual, $2,455 couple) pays the Part B premium only, funded by a capped federal block grant.
Alabama has no asset test for any of these programs. Savings accounts, home equity, and retirement funds are not counted.
How the Premium Payment Works
Once Alabama Medicaid approves the application, the agency transmits an electronic buy-in record to the Social Security Administration. SSA then stops deducting the Part B premium from the beneficiary's monthly check.
This process takes 60 to 90 days. During that administrative lag, SSA continues withholding $202.90 per month as though nothing has changed. The beneficiary's check will look the same for two or three months after approval.
Once SSA processes the state buy-in file, it does two things: stops future deductions and issues a lump-sum refund of every Part B premium withheld during the active MSP period. The refund arrives as a direct deposit or paper check — no separate request is needed.
If a beneficiary pays Part B through quarterly direct bills from CMS rather than Social Security deductions, CMS issues the refund once the state buy-in is established.
Why Search Results Are Misleading
A search for "help paying Medicare Part B premium Alabama" returns pages dominated by licensed insurance brokers and Medicare Advantage lead-generation sites. Their business model is commission-driven: they want to enroll the beneficiary in a Medicare Advantage plan or Dual-Eligible Special Needs Plan (D-SNP), not help them file a state Medicaid application.
These platforms rarely publish step-by-step instructions for submitting Form 210 to Alabama Medicaid. They do not explain the income disregard calculation, the 45-day processing timeline, or the SSA premium refund mechanics. Their goal is a phone number capture, not independent process navigation.
Alabama's SHIP program (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) through the Department of Senior Services provides free, unbiased counseling.
