Caregiver Benefit Nova Scotia: Eligibility, Amount, and Application
Caregiver Benefit Nova Scotia: Eligibility, Amount, and Application
You have been providing 20+ hours of unpaid care per week to your aging parent — bathing, meals, medication management, doctor appointments. The Nova Scotia Caregiver Benefit pays $400 per month to qualifying unpaid caregivers, but the eligibility criteria are strict and the income thresholds are lower than most families expect.
How Much the Benefit Pays
The Caregiver Benefit is a flat $400 per month paid directly to the caregiver. It is not income-tested on the caregiver's side — the income test applies to the care recipient only.
Only one caregiver per household can receive the benefit. You cannot combine hours spent caring for multiple recipients to reach the 20-hour threshold.
Care Recipient Eligibility
Your parent must meet all of the following:
Residency and age: Nova Scotia resident, at least 19 years old, with a valid health card.
Living situation: Must reside in a private home, not in a licensed long-term care facility.
Income threshold: Net household income must fall within Home Care Income Category A — that means $29,010 or less per year. This is the same income tier used for home care fee exemptions.
Functional impairment: Must be assessed by a Care Coordinator with one of these clinical profiles:
- MAPLe score of 5 (very high), OR
- MAPLe score of 4 (high) combined with at least one of:
- Cognitive Performance Scale (CPS) score of 2 or higher
- Activities of Daily Living (ADL) score of 3 or higher
- Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) Involvement score of 12 or higher
The MAPLe assessment is performed through the Continuing Care system — call 1-800-225-7225 to request one if your parent has not yet been assessed.
Caregiver Eligibility
You must meet separate criteria:
- Nova Scotia resident, at least 19 years old
- In an ongoing, unpaid care relationship expected to exceed 90 days
- Providing 20 or more hours per week of direct assistance with activities of daily living
- Sign a formal agreement with Nova Scotia Health and the Department of Seniors and Long-Term Care
Paid caregivers, home care workers, and facility staff are not eligible.

Beyond the $400: Other Financial Support
The Caregiver Benefit is one piece of a larger financial picture:

- Federal Canada Caregiver Credit (Line 30450): Up to $8,773 in claimable amount for the 2026 tax year — no requirement for the parent to live with you
- EI Family Caregiver Benefit: 15 weeks at 55% of earnings (up to $729/week) if you must step away from work
