Utah Legal Services provides free civil legal help to people who qualify. For seniors, its listed areas of help include public benefits, housing and nursing-home issues, limited estate-planning and advance-directive assistance, and defense of a proposed ward in a guardianship proceeding; it does not initiate guardianship petitions.

Utah Disability Law Center

Area Agencies on Aging

Utah's twelve Area Agencies on Aging coordinate local non-Medicaid senior services and can direct families to current legal-service providers. Their listed services include:

Court Fee Waivers

If you're filing a guardianship petition pro se and your household income qualifies, Utah courts offer filing fee waivers through a Motion to Waive Fees. The motion form is available on the Utah Courts self-help website. Eligibility follows the current Utah court criteria.

• Medicaid caregiver compensation. Under the Aging Waiver and New Choices Waiver, adult children can be hired as paid personal care assistants for a Medicaid-eligible parent. Spouses and legal guardians are excluded, but other family members over 16 qualify.
• FMLA protections. Federal family medical leave covers eligible employees caring for a parent with a serious health condition — up to 12 weeks unpaid, job-protected leave.
• Adult Protective Services. If you suspect a caregiver, facility, or family member is abusing or exploiting your parent, APS operates a 24-hour hotline at 1-800-371-7897.
