Alternatively, search "[county name] senior taxi vouchers" or "[city name] dial a ride seniors." Many programs don't use the word "voucher" in their official names, so also try "senior transportation subsidy" and "reduced fare taxi."

International Taxi Subsidy Programs

Several countries run more formalized taxi subsidy systems than the US.

Australia has state-level taxi subsidy schemes, including Victoria's Multi-Purpose Taxi Program (MPTP), New South Wales's Taxi Transport Subsidy Scheme (TTSS), Queensland's TSS, and Western Australia's Passenger Transport Subsidy Scheme (PTSS). Fare concessions, caps, and eligibility rules vary by program. Apply through the relevant state transport agency and check its medical-certification requirements.

United Kingdom seniors qualify for the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme — free off-peak bus travel across England starting at State Pension age. London residents can apply for the 60+ Oyster card (free bus and tram travel) or a Freedom Pass (free across all Transport for London modes). For taxi-specific subsidies, London boroughs like Newham and Hackney operate Taxicard schemes offering subsidized taxi trips for residents with severe mobility impairments.

British Columbia, Canada offers the BC Bus Pass for low-income seniors at $45/year, covering unlimited transit. HandyDART provides door-to-door paratransit across BC Transit service areas. The Travel Assistance Program (TAP) subsidizes medical travel costs for patients who need to travel more than a set distance for specialist appointments.

What Voucher Programs Don't Cover

Most taxi voucher programs cap monthly or annual spending, restrict use to within the county or metro area, and may exclude rides to destinations outside the program's geographic boundaries. They rarely cover out-of-state medical travel or airport trips. Some programs require the senior to be a registered resident of the sponsoring municipality.

Voucher programs also don't address the physical assistance gap. A taxi driver under a voucher program provides curb-to-curb service — the same as any standard taxi. If your parent needs help walking from the front door to the car, you'll need to pair the voucher program with a volunteer driver network or a door-through-door service.

Combining Vouchers With Other Programs

Taxi vouchers work best as one layer in a broader transportation plan. For medical trips, Medicaid NEMT and Medicare Advantage transportation benefits may be the first line — Medicaid NEMT is fully subsidized for eligible trips, while Medicare Advantage coverage is plan-specific.
