The most common complaint about wearable fall detection pendants is simple: the person who needs it most won't wear it. Research consistently shows that medical alert pendants end up in a drawer, on a nightstand, or removed because the wristband irritates arthritic skin. If your parent fell in the shower — the single highest-risk location — the pendant was probably sitting on the bedroom dresser.

Non-wearable fall detection removes the compliance problem entirely. These systems detect falls using radar, infrared, or ambient sensors mounted on walls or ceilings, requiring zero action from your parent.

How Non-Wearable Fall Detection Works

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar is the most advanced approach. A small wall-mounted unit (about the size of a smoke detector) emits radio waves that bounce off the human body. The device tracks micro-movements — breathing, gait speed, posture changes — and detects when a person's body position suddenly shifts from vertical to horizontal. Because radar passes through clothing, blankets, and even thin walls, it works in bathrooms, bedrooms, and dark rooms without any visual recording.

Infrared (PIR) motion sensors detect changes in thermal signatures. These are the same sensors used in home security systems but configured for fall detection: a sudden drop in the height of a heat signature, followed by a prolonged period of no vertical movement, triggers an alert. PIR sensors are cheaper than radar but have higher false-positive rates — a pet walking through the room or a blanket thrown on the floor can trigger them.

Acoustic sensors listen for the impact sound of a body hitting the floor and the voice patterns that follow (calling for help, crying out). These are the least reliable standalone option and are typically used alongside other sensor types.

Wearable vs. Non-Wearable: Honest Trade-Offs

Wearable fall detection (pendants, smartwatches) has one clear advantage: it works everywhere. If your parent falls in the garden, the garage, or a store, a wearable with GPS and cellular connectivity can call for help regardless of location.

Non-wearable systems only cover the rooms where sensors are installed. That's a real limitation. But for parents who spend most of their time at home — which describes the vast majority of adults over 80 — the coverage gap matters less than the compliance gap.

What to Look For in a Non-Wearable System

Room coverage radius. A single radar unit typically covers a 5–7 metre radius. For a standard one-bedroom flat, two units (bedroom + living area) provide adequate coverage. Larger homes need more units, which increases cost.

Alert pathway. The system needs to actually reach someone when it triggers. Some units connect to a 24/7 monitoring centre (with a monthly fee), while others send push notifications directly to a caregiver's smartphone (no monthly fee but no professional backup). Consider what happens at 3 AM when your phone is on silent.

False alarm rate. This is the make-or-break metric. A system that sends three false alarms a week will train you to ignore it — exactly the opposite of what you need. Look for systems that use AI-based movement classification rather than simple motion triggers, and ask vendors for their published false-positive rates.

Power backup. Non-wearable sensors are plugged into wall power. If the electricity goes out during a storm, the sensor goes dark. A built-in battery backup or connecting to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) prevents this gap — the same recommendation applies to your internet router, since most radar systems need Wi-Fi to send alerts.

The Hybrid Approach

The most reliable setup combines both: a non-wearable radar system covering the bathroom and bedroom (where compliance with wearables is lowest and fall risk is highest) alongside a simple wearable pendant or smartwatch for when your parent leaves the house.

This layered approach means you're never relying on a single point of failure. The radar catches the bathroom fall when the pendant is on the nightstand, and the pendant catches the garden fall where the radar can't reach.
