Long-Term Care Facilities in Yukon: Every Option From Whitehorse to Dawson City
Long-Term Care Facilities in Yukon: Every Option From Whitehorse to Dawson City
When your parent needs 24-hour care in Yukon, the territory has exactly five facilities — and three of them are in Whitehorse. That concentration means most rural families eventually face a relocation conversation, and understanding what each facility actually offers helps you advocate for the right placement.
Whistle Bend Place — Whitehorse (150 Beds)
The territory's largest and newest facility, Whistle Bend Place opened as a purpose-built continuing care centre with 150 beds and a 12-room expansion capacity. It handles the most complex clinical profiles in the territory.
Specializations: Dedicated 12-bed dementia and mental health units, a 12-bed palliative care wing, bariatric-capable rooms, couples rooms, and a traditional wild game kitchen for Indigenous residents. This facility accepts high-acuity admissions that no other Yukon location can accommodate.
Cost: The standard $1,217/month flat rate applies to all eligible residents. The Seniors and Elders Community Day Program also operates here at $5/day for non-residential participants.
Copper Ridge Place — Whitehorse (96 Beds)
Copper Ridge Place is the territory's primary secure dementia facility. Its 96 beds serve residents with advanced Alzheimer's, severe behavioral symptoms, and complex chronic conditions.
Specializations: Secure dementia environments designed for residents who wander or display aggression, pediatric complex care, extended chronic care, and dedicated physical therapy spaces. If your parent has moderate-to-severe dementia, this is likely where the Continuing Care Admissions Coordinator will recommend placement.
Cost: Same $1,217/month flat rate. No premium for specialized dementia care.
Thomson Centre — Whitehorse (Variable Beds)
The Thomson Centre operates as an integrated care facility connected to Whitehorse General Hospital. Bed count fluctuates because it serves a dual role — providing intermediate and extended care while also absorbing hospital overflow.
Specializations: Intermediate care, extended rehabilitation services, and acute transition for patients being decompressed from the hospital. Families whose parent is currently on an ALC (Alternate Level of Care) hospital hold may see a temporary placement here before a permanent bed opens at Whistle Bend or Copper Ridge.

Alexander McDonald Lodge — Dawson City (15 Beds)
The only dedicated care facility outside Whitehorse, McDonald Lodge serves the northern Yukon from Dawson City. With just 15 beds (including 2 respite beds), capacity is extremely limited.
Specializations: Light-to-moderate personal care with intermittent professional nursing. Also serves as the regional headquarters for Dawson City's home care program. This facility cannot handle complex clinical needs — residents requiring 24-hour nursing supervision or secure dementia care must transfer to Whitehorse.
Watson Lake Community Hospital — Watson Lake (6 Beds)
Watson Lake lacks a dedicated long-term care home. The community hospital provides 6 inpatient beds that handle temporary acute care, palliative stays, and fee-based respite.
Limitations: This is not a permanent placement option. Families in Watson Lake whose parent needs ongoing residential care will need to plan a relocation to Whitehorse — a 450 km journey that significantly affects family dynamics.
How Placement Decisions Get Made
You don't choose your parent's facility the way you'd pick a hotel. The Continuing Care Admissions Coordinator assesses clinical needs, matches them against available beds, and recommends placement. Families can express preferences, but bed availability and clinical fit determine the outcome.
The Yukon Long-Term Care Costs & Subsidies Guide includes a facility comparison worksheet and the intake preparation checklist families use before the admissions assessment — the meeting where placement recommendations are made.
