Help Paying Medicare Part B Premium in New Mexico

The Part B Premium in 2026

The standard Medicare Part B premium is $202.90 per month in 2026. Social Security deducts it directly from your monthly check before the deposit hits your account. For someone living on $1,200/month in Social Security, that's nearly 17% of their income disappearing before they see a dollar.

New Mexico's Medicare Savings Programs can eliminate that deduction entirely. All three programs — QMB, SLMB, and QI — pay the Part B premium.

Who Qualifies

Income limits for a single person in 2026:

  • QMB: up to $1,330/month countable income (effectively $1,350 gross, after the $20 disregard)
  • SLMB: $1,330 – $1,596/month
  • QI: $1,596 – $1,796/month

Couple limits are $1,804, $2,164, and $2,435 respectively.

New Mexico has no asset test. Savings accounts, home equity, and vehicles are excluded from the eligibility determination.

How to Apply

Three routes:

  1. YesNM portal (yes.nm.gov) — create an account, complete the application online, and upload verification documents from your phone or computer
  2. Phone — call the Consolidated Customer Service Center at 1-800-283-4465 (Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 6:30 PM MT)
  3. Mail — download the HCA-100 application from yes.nm.gov and mail it to the Income Support Division, P.O. Box 2348, Santa Fe, NM 87504

Adult children helping a parent from another state can act as an authorized representative by submitting a signed HCA Authorized Representative Designation Form.

Processing Time

The Income Support Division's standard processing window for MSP applications is 45 days. When verification documents are clean and complete, many applications clear faster. Delays happen most often when the YesNM portal's automated system flags a discrepancy between self-reported income and back-end database records, triggering a manual caseworker review without clearly explaining the holdup to the applicant.

When the Premium Deduction Stops

QMB: coverage starts the first of the month after approval. If approved on March 15, coverage begins April 1.

SLMB and QI: coverage can be applied retroactively up to three calendar months before the application month. If you applied in March and qualified since January, the state covers Part B premiums for January, February, and March as well.

After ISD approves the application, the state sends a buy-in file to SSA. SSA updates its records and stops deducting the Part B premium from the monthly Social Security check. Any premiums withheld during months of MSP eligibility are refunded — either added to a future check or issued as a separate payment.

Updating the Social Security record after ISD approval can take multiple months. During that gap, the state is paying the premium but SSA hasn't caught up yet. The refund covers the overlap.

What Else You Get

Part B premium coverage is the minimum benefit. QMB enrollees also get Part A premiums paid (if applicable), plus full cost-sharing coverage — the Part A deductible ($1,736), the Part B deductible ($283), and all Medicare coinsurance and copayments.

All three programs trigger automatic Extra Help eligibility, cutting Part D prescription drug costs to minimal copays.

The New Mexico Medicare Savings Programs & Extra Help Guide includes a buy-in tracker for monitoring when SSA reflects the change, plus a communication log template for follow-up calls to SSA and the ISD.
