Tax Credits for Elder Care in Newfoundland and Labrador
Tax Credits for Elder Care in Newfoundland and Labrador
If you are paying for a parent's care in Newfoundland and Labrador, multiple federal and provincial tax credits can reduce the out-of-pocket costs. These credits are often overlooked because they are claimed on tax returns rather than through separate applications — but they can be worth thousands of dollars.
Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
The federal Disability Tax Credit is the gateway benefit for seniors with significant impairments. A parent who has severe and prolonged limitations in walking, dressing, feeding, or cognitive function may qualify. The condition must have lasted or be expected to last at least 12 consecutive months.
The DTC itself reduces federal tax owed. But in Newfoundland and Labrador, it also unlocks the provincial NL Income Supplement (NLIS), which pays an additional $231 annually — deposited automatically once the DTC is approved and taxes are filed.
If the senior has insufficient taxable income to use the full DTC, the unused portion can be transferred to a supporting family member — typically the adult child who is paying for their care.
Application requires Form T2201, certified by the senior's physician or nurse practitioner.
Home Accessibility Tax Credit (HATC)
The federal HATC provides a 15% non-refundable credit on up to $20,000 in qualifying renovation expenses — a maximum credit of $3,000 per year. Eligible renovations include grab bars, walk-in showers, wheelchair ramps, stairlifts, widened doorways, and non-slip flooring.
The senior must be 65+ or qualify for the DTC. The renovations must be done to a dwelling the senior lives in as their principal residence.
Multigenerational Home Renovation Tax Credit
This federal credit covers major renovations to create a secondary suite for an elderly parent (or a person with a disability) within an existing home. It offers a 15% credit on up to $50,000 in qualifying renovation costs, for a maximum credit of $7,250.
The suite must be a self-contained living unit — a private entrance, kitchen, and bathroom. This credit applies to families building an in-law suite to bring a parent into their own home as an alternative to residential care.

Medical Expenses Tax Credit
Long-term care fees, prescription drug costs not covered by the NL Prescription Drug Program, private nursing services, mobility aids, and medical supplies are all potentially claimable under the federal Medical Expenses Tax Credit. You can claim eligible expenses that exceed the lesser of 3% of net income or a fixed threshold (approximately $2,635 for 2026).
Expenses can be claimed by either the senior or the supporting family member — whichever produces the greater tax benefit. Keep receipts for everything: care facility invoices, pharmacy bills, ambulance co-payments ($115 per MCP-insured trip), medical travel costs, and equipment purchases.
Caregiver Amount
If you are providing care and financial support to a parent who is dependent on you due to a mental or physical impairment, the federal Canada Caregiver Credit may apply. This non-refundable credit reduces your taxable income. The parent must have a net income below a threshold (approximately $18,783 for 2026) for the full credit.
Stacking Strategy
These credits work together. A senior approved for the DTC automatically qualifies for higher HATC limits and unlocks the provincial NLIS supplement. Medical expenses and home renovations are claimed in the same tax year as the care costs. The Newfoundland and Labrador Long-Term Care Costs & Subsidies Guide maps out how each credit interacts with the provincial care fee assessment and which filing strategies minimize total out-of-pocket cost.
