Free Equipment Through the Local Authority
Welsh local authorities provide simple equipment worth up to £1,000 free of charge following an occupational therapy assessment. Request this through your parent's local authority adult social services team — the OT visits the home, assesses what is needed, and arranges provision.
Common items include grab rails for bathrooms and stairways, raised toilet seats, bath boards, key safes for care workers, and ramps for step access. For dementia specifically, the OT may recommend contrasting-colour toilet seats (depth perception deteriorates with dementia, making white-on-white bathrooms difficult to navigate), non-slip flooring, and lever taps that are easier to operate.
For adaptations costing more than £1,000 — stairlifts, level-access showers, widened doorways — ask the local authority housing department about Disabled Facilities Grant eligibility and the current means-tested limit.
Care & Repair Cymru
Care & Repair Cymru is a Welsh Government-funded network that operates across all 22 local authorities. They provide free home assessments for people aged 60 and over, identifying safety hazards, recommending adaptations, and helping with grant applications.
Their caseworkers handle the practical details — obtaining quotes from contractors, supervising the work, and ensuring it meets standards. For families already overwhelmed by care coordination, having someone else manage the home adaptation process removes a significant administrative burden.

Dementia-Specific Safety Modifications
Beyond standard adaptations, dementia creates specific environmental risks that standard OT assessments may not fully address.
Kitchen safety. Cooker isolation valves allow you to turn off the gas supply when the cooker is not being actively supervised. Automatic cooker shut-off devices cut power after a set period of inactivity. Both reduce fire risk without removing the cooker entirely, which can feel punitive to the person living there.
Door and exit management. Discrete door handle covers or double-action locks on external doors reduce wandering risk without creating a visually imposing barrier. Motion-sensor chimes alert you when an external door opens. Avoid locks that require a key to exit from inside — these create a fire safety hazard.
Night-time navigation. Motion-activated night lights along the route from bedroom to bathroom reduce falls during the night. A clear, unobstructed path matters more than bright lighting — remove rugs, cables, and furniture that could catch a foot in the dark.
Visual cues and wayfinding. Contrasting colours help a person with dementia distinguish surfaces and objects. A dark toilet seat on a white toilet, a brightly coloured handrail against a pale wall, a different colour for the bathroom door. Avoid patterned carpets — they can cause visual confusion and trigger anxiety.

Telecare and Assistive Technology
Welsh local authorities offer telecare packages that include pendant alarms, door sensors, flood detectors, gas detectors, and bed occupancy sensors. These connect to a monitoring centre that responds when an alert is triggered.
Ask the local authority how any telecare charges are assessed and whether the £100 weekly cap applies to the package. If your parent is already receiving home care, ask the council whether telecare is included in the same assessment.
More advanced assistive technology options include medication dispensers with alarms and automatic dosing, GPS trackers for people who walk independently but are at risk of getting lost, and video-enabled door intercoms that let you screen visitors remotely.
